Great Gatsby party outfit: a 1920s look that works in 2026 (Tallinn edition)

The invitation lands in your inbox: company Christmas party, theme “The Great Gatsby”, a manor house or a vaulted cellar hall in Tallinn’s Old Town, doors at seven. If you have moved to Estonia recently, your first thought is probably where on earth to find a 1920s dress in a city you are still learning – and your second is whether the whole thing will look like fancy dress. We are the Kostüümirent team, and every autumn this is the question we hear most often in our showroom. The honest answer: Gatsby is one of the easiest themes you can get. The silhouette is simple, the accessories do most of the work, and a well-chosen fringe dress looks just as current in 2026 as it did a century ago.
This guide covers what actually mattered in 1920s style, which Gatsby look suits you, how a man joins in without looking like an extra, and what an organiser should write on the invitation so half the guests don’t arrive in tuxedos and the other half in jeans.
What 1920s style really was – and what you can skip
The 1920s woman got rid of the corset, and everything follows from that: a straight silhouette, waistline dropped to the hips, hem at the knee or mid-calf, nothing squeezed anywhere. Fabric was made to move – fringe, strings of pearls, beaded embroidery, light silk and lace were designed for the Charleston, not for standing still.
The second signature is Art Deco geometry: symmetrical patterns, metallics and black, gold and champagne, emerald and midnight blue. The third is the head: short finger waves or hair pinned up, a headband or a jewelled clip, long drop earrings.
What you can happily leave out: the feather boa (in a warm ballroom it sticks and sheds), the long cigarette holder and the “gangster” props. Those turn a look into a costume. One good dress, one good accessory and the right hair turn it into style.

Three Gatsby looks for women
1. The classic flapper: fringe, pearls and champagne tones
This is the look most people picture when they hear Gatsby, and for good reason – it works. A fringe dress or two-piece set in a light tone (cream, champagne, silver), pearls at the neck or on the dress itself, nude shoes. On the dance floor every step becomes movement, in photos the fringe catches the light, and at a seated dinner it reads as exactly as elegant as it should.
The most “correct” pieces for this direction in our collection are the Moonlight Gatsby set (pearls, sequins and silky fringe), the Pearl Motion cocktail dress and the long-fringed Champagne Fringe midi dress.

2. Dark glamour: black, crystals and velvet
If light tones are not yours, or if the evening is more dinner than dancing, go black. Black in the twenties was never boring – it was beaded, framed with crystals, cut in velvet. Dark glamour works especially well when you know the room will be candlelit and dim: then shine and movement count, not colour.
Look at the Jazz Age dress (crystal neckline and dense fringe), the strapless Midnight Fringe midi dress and the one-shoulder Velvet Rhythm cocktail dress, where velvet meets black fringe.

3. Colour and movement: emerald, silver, ice blue
At a Gatsby party most guests wear black or gold. If you want to be found in the photos, pick a colour the twenties loved themselves: emerald green, deep blue, silver. Fringe and movement stay, the tone changes – and the look is on theme and unmistakably yours.
In this group: the Forest Fringe midi dress (forest-green jacquard, asymmetric cut), the Pistachio Fringe midi dress and the Silver Mist dress with floor-length silver fringe.

For him: a Gatsby suit that does not feel like a costume
Men’s 1920s are simple: a three-piece suit, waistcoat non-negotiable, stripes welcome, bow tie or a slim tie, patent shoes. If the party leans glamorous rather than historical, a sequinned statement jacket is a modern interpretation that photographs better than any vintage waistcoat.
From our men’s range: the Gatsby Glam suit (black with gold sequin detail), the Monochrome Stripe suit (wide black-and-white stripes for the bold) and the Royal Pinstripe Black suit for the classic gentleman. Underneath, the White Tie dress shirt with its bow tie, and on the feet the Tuxedo Essential patent shoes.

Accessories do 80% of the work
When the dress is simple, the accessories carry the theme. The table below shows what the twenties wore and how to wear it in 2026 so that it reads as style.
Element | In the 1920s | How to wear it in 2026 |
Pearls | Long strand, often doubled, sometimes down the back | One long strand or pearls on the dress – not both at once |
Headpiece | Headband, jewelled clip, pearl-trimmed hat | A fine pearl clip in waved hair, or a hat for the photos |
Gloves | Elbow-length evening gloves | Glossy evening gloves with a dark dress – take them off to dance |
Bag | Small beaded purse | Mother-of-pearl or pleated clutch that fits phone and lipstick |
Shoes | Low strappy heel | Nude or black strappy heel; a spare pair for the cloakroom |
Among our accessories, the Pearl Brim hat, the pearl-chain Pearl Royale shoulder piece (when the dress itself is plain) and the Pearl Shell clutch or Noir Pleat clutch all suit a Gatsby look. The full range is in the shop.

For organisers: how to put a Gatsby theme on the invitation
The most common mistake is writing just “theme: Gatsby”. Half the office turns up in tails and feathers, the other half ignores it because nobody knows how seriously it is meant. In an international team in Tallinn the spread is even wider. Three sentences on the invitation solve it:
Name the level: “1920s glamour – festive dress with a twenties touch” means pearls and a fringe dress are enough; “full Gatsby costume” means the whole package is expected.
Give women and men one sentence each: for her, fringe, pearls, velvet, Art Deco; for him, three-piece suit, waistcoat, bow tie, patent shoes.
Add a link or a couple of examples – this post, for instance – so nobody spends hours searching.
If the venue is a manor or the Old Town in December, mention the cloakroom and a change of shoes: a fringe dress and a snowy car park do not mix.
If your team wants a coherent style, it is worth booking a fitting together – in the showroom it is easier to put together two or three looks that work side by side in photos. For the general dress-code levels, read our dress code guide.
Checklist: a Gatsby party in Estonia in December
Dress or suit chosen and tried on at least a couple of weeks before the party – December is peak season and the popular sizes go first.
One main accessory (pearls, headpiece or gloves) – not everything at once.
Hair planned: short waves or an updo with a headpiece.
A warm coat on top and a spare pair of shoes for the cloakroom – fringe and snow are not friends.
The standard rental period is up to three days: collect the dress the evening before, return it after the party. Cleaning is on us.
If plans change, a booking can be cancelled up to 72 hours before the rental period starts – details in the rental terms.

Frequently asked questions
What do I wear to a Gatsby-themed office party if I don’t want a costume?
Choose one signature, not all of them: a fringe or beaded dress with a straight silhouette, pearls at the neck and simple waved hair. It reads as on-theme but looks like a party dress, not fancy dress. Dark velvet or a black sequin dress with one pearl accessory works the same way.
Does a Gatsby look have to be a short dress?
No. The twenties hem sat between the knee and mid-calf, but at a modern Gatsby party a maxi dress with fringe or sequins is perfectly at home, especially at a seated dinner. What matters is a straight, uncorseted silhouette and fabric that moves.
What does a man wear to a Gatsby party?
A three-piece suit with a waistcoat, white shirt and bow tie or slim tie, patent shoes. Stripes are allowed. If the party is glamorous, a sequinned jacket works too. A hat and braces are not needed unless it is explicitly a costume party.
Can I try the dress on before booking? I’m new to Tallinn.
Yes. Fittings take place in our showroom in Tallinn (Krulli 2b, room 412) by prior arrangement – message us on Instagram or by e-mail and we will agree a time. Bring the shoes you plan to wear.
How long is the rental period and who cleans the dress afterwards?
The standard rental period is up to three days, so you have time to get ready and return the dress after the party. Cleaning is taken care of by us – you return the dress as it is after the night. Full details are on the rental terms page.
